What happened to Steve on "This old house"?

I hadn't watched it for a while and was disappointed to see he's gone. I also noticed that Norm has a more limited role in the show.

He left to work on other projects including a program on The History Channel and a show about Habitat for Humanity on DIY Network.

I dont know 100% , but I'd heard that he was killed in a car accident about 3 years ago. Hope that isnt true.

He's still alive. He does productions for other networks and consulting on housebuilding.
