What in this movie made it so controversial that it had to be banned from North America?

Yes, I saw it as a child. I thought it was cute and funny, and seemed to be a faithful adaptation of the classic Uncle Remus stories. I think the main reason why it was deemed controversial was the segment about the tar baby. In the movie it really was a fake baby made out of tar to trap Br'er Rabbit, and not a racial epithet of any kind, but the studio probably decided it was safest for children not to hear those two words together in any context. Chalk it up to political correctness.
