Arachnophobia, and perhaps some counseling might help. Dunno. There's no love lost between spiders and me, but it's certainly not to your extent. Good luck to ya.

Go to "Ask.com" for one answer. There was a very cool movie years ago called "Arachnophobia".
I personally have had several Tarantulas as "Pets" although spiders do not have the intelligence to know they are pets. I found that studying them helped my fear of them. I now know that the only truly poisonous Tarantulas are found in Australia. The most deadly spiders are not tarantulas! The bite of most all tarantulas for example can be compared to the sting of the average wasp. Unless you happen to be allergic to them.

Arachnephobia is the word used. Go to such sites as http://www.phobia-fear-release.com/arachnephobia.html and perhaps you can learn how to overcome this fear.
With black widows and brown recluse spiders, there is a reason to be afraid. However, you can learn what these spiders look like. You are much bigger than a spider, so you can easily squash them. Learn what you can about spiders, learn what you can about arachnephobia and you will build confidence and be able to overcome it.
Good luck.

Arachnophobia ...

All fears, including this one, are easily fixed through Hypnosis. Be careful with desensitization methods, they sometime just make the fear manifest itself in other ways.

I am a Hypnotist and would love to explain more if you needed it. Just email me if you want more info. I don't want to give a big explanation on here.

It's called arachnophobia. Desensitization is a way to deal with it by gradually exposing a patient to spiders.

Not sure what causes this irrational few of spiders--other than conditioning from our mothers! I was not fond of spiders, but lived in the country so grew up knowing that they were a part of life and did, in fact, help eliminate insects. As a young adult, I got to live in Japan for a year, in one wing of a Japanese family's home. First thing I found was that there were 2 HUGE spiders--as large as a person's hand, and was finally pursuaded NOT to kill them, as they killed something that was WORSE! They were hunter spiders--opposed to web-building ones. They actually went out and hunted down their prey, not catching it in a web. I learned to live with them--in fact, to finally tolerate their sleeping on the rafters directly above our heads at night!! There was no heating in the home, and I realized they were there collecting what heat rose from our uncovered heads! They seemed to follow me in the morning--and sat on the wall a scant 3' from my face when I heated my coffee water on the hot plate--again collecting the heat from the steam. I finally accepted that they had no interest in me!! I finally found what they ate--when one night, as the huge tub of cold water was slowly heating, suddenly a segmented fat centipede fell from the rafters into my bath water!!! I finally fished him out and flushed him down the toilet--then SCOLDED the pair who sat looking at me from the wall! Scolded them for not being more thorough!! Every creature has it's purpose. The only thing that even came close to a relationship was at night. There was no radio--certainly no TV then, so I read a lot under one lamp in my basket chair. Around 9 p.m., one of the pair would walk around my chair right on the circle of light!! I never got over having to tuck my knees under my chin. Then when the larger spider had completed his circle, he'd pause and look straight at me--almost as if he were saying, "Aren't you coming to bed yet?" Then finally the two of them would troop into the bedroom--to their sleeping positions...above my bed.

As a retired therapist, I'd strongly suggest you find a good therapist who would help you explore the "programming" that your mother did with you. Perhaps fear of spiders aren't the only thing your mother instilled in you. Others' Ans are good too. Learning about them at Nature Centers, etc. Spiders are programmed to either HUNT their food, or to CATCH it!! As other said, certainly, there are several that bite--for their own protection. Hope you can track this down and not let it dominate your life/enjoyment of Nature!!

You have to stopped being scared of them.
You are much bigger and stronger than them.
When you see the spider stomp on it with all your might.
I have killed at least 20 spiders in the past month.
