I don't feel glee, but I'm not going to pretend I'm sad about the death of a man who caused so much grief for so many people. You know who I'm remembering today? All the teenage kids who have killed themselves because they were gay, and they had parents who followed Falwell's extremism and were rejected by their families because of it. I'm also remembering how he got fat and rich from spewing his hatred and bigotry to people who ate it up with a spoon. He was a poisonous man who used religion to shore up his own bigotries and he regularly twisted the word of God to fit his own agenda. There are millions of Christians around the country who have rightfully asked why Christians were being persecuted by the press and by others because they got lumped in with the extremism of people like Falwell and Robertson. Sorry, I can't feel sorrow for a human being like Falwell and I won't pretend I do. He's God's problem now and I can just imagine the look of surprise on his face when God asks him to explain how gays were responsible for 9/11. Please.

I do think it shows a lack of respect for him. But he did similar things to people he didn't like. Even if it is sick, what goes around comes around.
After the September 11, 2001, attacks Falwell said on the 700 Club, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

It is a simple reflection of the doggedly disdain for one fellow man.
A primal lack of civility.

This is the most ridiculous day I have ever seen on YA. They are all bashing him but they don't see that they're doing the same thing that they accuse him of. He had his opinions, he voiced them. I feel bad for his family and hope and pray they don't see all this stuff. The liberals are no better than what they claim Jerry Falwell to be.

Dude...I'm not dancing on poor Jerry's grave, but a nut is a nut is a nut.
In his own unique way, he was as much in orbit as Joe McCarthy.

I should be bashing and making fun of him for basically blaming civil libertarians for 9/11. And I'm...well a libertarian. But i choose not too. I don't make or poke fun at people when they die, or try not too. Except if it was Osama Bin Laden, then that sh** would be hilarious.

Please, it would be hypocritical to call him an asshole while he is alive and pretend he is not when he is dead. I have no glee that he is dead, but the fact that he is doesn't change the fact of what a jerk he was.
Are you going to respectfully shut up, out of respect for the family, when bin laden dies? I didn't think so. And in terms of religious rhetoric, they are equals.

I'm a leftist and you don't see me shouting with glee over his passing. I'm glad he can't preach hate anymore but I don't wish him evil.

Falwell was a man whose intolerent views are the antithesis of liberalism and clear headed, lucid, thinking. But, he made his mark on his generation, and, for this, he should be respected.
