I can't get them to cancel my account

AOL is like that., they are the worst ISP in the world. Complain to your local DA. Ask you credit card company to change your account # and issue you a new card.

You can cancel your membership by delivering notice to AOL’s Customer Service Department at 1-888-265-8008.
They have a rep for not canceling service, just make sure you insist until they agree.

You can write until the cows come home, but will they read it is another matter.
I had to fax my cancellation 3 times before they did it, took 3 months.

webmaster emails to AOL are useless, just stop the payments. That might make them listen.
