My dad got 2 Beta fish, and when I put them in their fish tank they puffed up and started fighting. So I took one and gave it a time out in a separate jar. If I put it back in the tank, do you think it will have learned its lesson not to fight?

They will not learn their lesson. Fighting each other over territory is simply a natural thing to them. Trying to teach them to not fight is like trying to teach you not to breathe. If you put two males together, they will fight, it's what they do.

I've been told that there are some examples that bettas could be trained to do some stuff. Personally I cannot confirm that. My betta simply does whatever it likes, either I try to play and keep it busy or not. Seems that it doesn't give a damn ;-) I've been also told to put up against it a mirror so that it could see it's reflection and flare, but also to be careful that it doesn't keep bumping on the glass. I've tried that -> result : it flares for just one sec and then simply turns it's back swimming away ... explain that...
I think you should not try to "teach" them a lesson. Try better a tank separator or a different tank, so that you can enjoy both of your fish without any undesired consequences !

No, they will fight each other; hence the nickname- siamese fighting fish. I have two male bettas and they are in the same tank but there is a divider between them. This is the only way they can live without either one harming the other. It sucks because male bettas are very beautiful and it just seems that it would just be beautiful to have four or five in one tank swimming around in harmony. Unfortunately this is not the case.

Leave one in time out for the rest of it's life. Both Betta's will live longer! Male Betta's are not to be put in the same tank ever!! Thats why they are called fighting fish. People need to do some research before purchasing fish,to save the fish from being over stressed, neglected and abused.

unless you have a tank with a lot of hiding spots and a large tank you shouldnt keep two male betas together.
they are so aggresive towards each other and will fight until the death.
if you want more than one betta you can get 3 females for one male. this way the females out number the male.
Also make sure you have a large enough tank for this.

sure, extra beneficial than a million beta fish in a tank will combat one yet another, although there is situations of the place ive heard beta fish struggling with at first, yet then making a sequence of command that we could them peacefully co exist. Beta fish will combat something that has fins the scale, close to to, or larger than theirs.

I'm not sure; it might work. If time outs don't work, you may have to give your aqua pals a spanking. That'll learn 'em.

What's with all these comments about not putting two beta fish together? That's just stupid. If beta fish were meant to be placed in solitary confinement, don't you think they'd have gone extinct long ago? How the heck is the species going to survive if you don't let two come together.

The common name for Beta fish is Siamise Fighting Fish. Note the word "fighting". You can NOT put two male Betas together, they will fight until one is dead, no questions about it. You will have to keep them seperated for the rest of their lives or one will die for sure when you put them together.

No, male bettas are territorial and will fight to the death if you leave them in the same tank. Each betta needs its own home. Nothing you can do will ever stop them from fighting.

You can NEVER put two Bettas in the same tank, they will fight to the death!

Bettas are Siamese Fighting Fish, they will fight with their own kind.

So no, giving them "time-outs" will never work.
