We're taking a vacation in July to Mooshead Lake in Maine and were looking for a scenic, yet efficient way to get there from Boston.

Time isn't a factor, as we'd rather take a scenic route than 95 straight north, but we don't want to get stuck in a 6 hour maze of stop lights and towns with not much to see. Maybe up through the White Mountains of NH and then cut over somewhere around Gorham, NH?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you tried mapping the trip on google?

Also, if you have a AAA card, you can go to their site. Also you can call and ask them to do a special route for you.

At Mapquest you can ask for various routes, such as excluding toll roads, I played with it in a couple of ways and the non-highway routes can take you from 1 to 3 hours longer on a five hour trip.

Are you sure you don't want to just take the highways? You could go on the scenic route as part of your vacation on another day!

Most of the towns are small enough that you won't get stuck in a maze of traffic lights once you get north of Concord NH. I would take 93 to exit 23 to 104 to 3 to 25. It is the route to the White Mountains through Meredith, Moultonborough, Ossipee( all NH) and into Fryberg Maine. You want to get into Maine but not by going all the way up to Gorham.

Your own thought is a good one but even more scenic would be to go further north in NH to Errol and cut eastward into Maine from there.

I could give you a great way to go, as I am going there next weekend. Do like I did. Get a road atlas and plan your trip that way.
