I was a veteran of Vietnam in my late mid 30s/early 40s in the 80s and perceived that things were fairly peaceful then. Most of the troubles seemed out of our country, we seemed on the brink of winning the cold war, Islamic fanatics were not a serious international threat, Israel was enjoying a slight quiet period before the Intifadas began and illegal immigration was not rampant. There was some tension but nothing close to today and the outlook wasn't so gloomy and foggy. Even race relations seemed to be smoothing out. Let's hope peace just breaks out (my cynicism may not allow me to believe in that, however).

Regan had this aura of a war monger that I think scared the rest of the world. The US had just come out of the Jimmy Carter era of exceptionally high interest rates (18% 30 year mortgages) that pretty much killed the real estate market nation wide. The Iran hostage situation was resolved just prior to the Regan administration - see Regan war monger fear. The USSR was at the end of their own Iraq like experience in Afghanistan and for what ever reason Regan was successful at pressuring the USSR into a situation where it collapsed w/o firing a bullet.
Add to that there was no such thing as the Internet or cell phones. The hyper-connectivity that we experience today didn't exist. So, yes it did seem like a simpler time.
In 20 years look back on the year 2007 and I'm sure this will seem like the good old days too.

The 80's blew, Awful music and an idiot President who had Altzheimers in office running up massive debt that 20 generations from now won't be able to pay off.

Other than the fact that we were on the brink of nuclear war with the U.S.S.R several times, yes it was fairly peaceful.

That was not the case for people working in the military. There were growing military threats around the world.
