I have had three in my lifetime. They are really great, and were worth what I paid. Two of them were in Germany and one was in the United States.
I started off with the barber washing my face and then wrapping it with hot towels. It seemed like the towels were on my face for a long time. It was later explained that the hot towels were to "soften up" my beard and make the shave go easier.
The barber used an old-fashioned straight-edge razor, of probably the same design as they used more than 100 years ago. He got out a leather razor strop to make sure the blade was just right. Instead of using a hot lather machine, he used an old-fashioned shaving mug with a bristle brush to make the shaving foam. Oh, yes, he cautioned me not to move my face muscles when he was shaving. When I shave myself with a Gillette safety razor, I have a tendency to contort my face so that I get the right kind of an angle with the blade. This was not necessary with a professional shave. The barber does the work.
After the shave, the German barbers put 4711 cologne on me. The American barber used a Pinaud after shave on my face.
If you want to have a really luxurious experience, get a shave by a good barber. They are expensive, but it is a rare treat. I enjoyed it.

Yes, my barber learned how to be a barber in the old school way. He used a strop and straight razor, and hot towels. I never saw him nic anyone. You just can't get a better shave than with a straight razor in the hand of someone who knows how to use it.

It depends on the barber, but it is usually excellent. My mates and I used to have one before any special parades, but a lot of barbers stopped doing them. Just found one locally that does and it was as good as I remembered.
One bit of advice is to allow your stubble to grow for a day or two, it gives a much better shave.

About 20 years ago. fantastic. Could have happily fell asleep. He could even tell what razor I used.
Suspect there aren't too many like him nowadays. He was Polish with a shop in West London. Had a name with a lot of consonants in it but called himself Ezzard Charles

Before my husband goes away on holiday, he treats himself to a 'proper' shave. He loves it, and says it is his annual pampering
