What are things that we Americans cannot live without that are difficult to find in France? Or, if you have an American friend living abroad, what would you mail him/her?

Honestly, I would bring the neccessities: soap, toothpaste, shampoo etc. Not because France doesn't have these, but because the Euro is so much stronger than the dollar, they cost a lot more for an American in France. A tube of toothpaste might cost $4.00 in the US, but it would cost your friend the equivalent of $5.75 US dollars in France. That stuff adds up!

I had my mom mail me Reese peanut butter cups and frappacinos when I lived abroad. I don't know about you but when I'm in another country I actually try and break away from my American habits and try to absorb or at least try things how they would do it. I think by exposing yourself to another culture and how they live you can learn a lot. Some of the things you won't like or understand but you'll also find a ton of amazing new things (and then when you'll leave you'll wonder how you will live without it!). Depending on how long you'll be gone just tough it out I'd say! :-)

Come on !! Be an adventurous girl !! lol And don't worry, France is almost a civilized country (i can say that : i'm french !!), don't be afraid of people protesting in the streets... we just love strikes and manifestations...

Well, I don't know about Americans generally, but no good Southerner can live without soft southern flour like Martha White (it has a low gluten content) that is required to make proper biscuits. Then there's also Moonpies and Dr. Pepper.

As a Texan I need to have a supply of dried chili peppers (Chile de Arbol, Pequin and Poblano) and Masa Harina (to make totillas and tamales).

French Beer is very bad. If you like a hoppy beer you won't find it there.

Smoked dried peppers, like what the Texan said at the top; I am from California and I need anchos and chipoltes to live!

Large bags of corn chips; they only have little bags.

The French don't have chewing tobacco (yuck).

It is hard to find foreign items in France; like nori for making sushi, or even items from bordering countries like Dutch Stroopwaffels. Things from Japan or Hawaii are considered very exotic.

They don't have pinto beans, and many other varieties of beans aren't available.

They don't have many good California wines.

Electronics are almost double the price in France.

Hey, when I travel to a foreign country, I don't bring stuff from my own country. Needless. Why would I travel, if it's to have the same things I have at home
