I am a software architect in .Net and if you want to try the path itook 5 years ago try this.

Step 1 : Go thru these easy to learn tutorials

http://www.asp.net/Tutorials/quickstart.aspx

Step 2: Just use the free stuff available online and best way to do this is to watch the webcasts. You dont need to buy a lot of books to do this. Just watch as many webcasts as possible and take down some notes.

Try to repeat what you see on webcasts. Follow the instructions and you will be glad to see the results and you will realize how easy it is to learn any thing.

Step 3: You can run but you can never hide from books yes you need to read some books not a lot but you need to read atleast the most useful books for reference. [ I would rethink this part because i live on the internet and books are almost obsolete unless ofcourse if its a new technology or new software. Most books dont trouble shoot your specific bugs at work.] But the idea is for you to gain as much knowledge as possible.

For cheap books try.

www.half.com

there are many other places you can buy books cheap.

Step 4: Try one of those Microsoft certifications in .NET. it helps you for your interviews. Make this Certification as a bench mark to check how much you learnt if you just want to clear the certification every certification has cheat sheet and brain dump. You will clear the exam but will never have the knowledge to clear the interview. I personally dont give any extra credit to any candidate with certification when I am doing the interview.

There are two popular languages C# & VB.NET in which you can do programming.
ASP.NET is a technology to build web applications, remember its not a language.
ASP.NET supports two languages C# & VB.NET.

While no one would say it outright, .Net is in the same league as in and theoretical copy-cat of Java but obviously a competing technology, and one extra design called language-neutral in that while there are bindings of C# VB and C++ to .Net framework and enabling compilation to .Net there can be others like IronPython, Java sticks with its own language in contrast. C# being the most popular but VB.Net is another good choice, they all compile into the same bytecode but in .Net it's called Intermediate Language.

ASP.Net is different, just a newer version of ASP sort of like JSP for Java, ASP.Net uses either C# or VB.Net as its language engine, your choice of which one to use.
