In Greek mythology, Persephone was the Queen of the Underworld, (the young maiden), the daughter of Demeter and Zeus.
other names: Persephassa, Persephatta, or simply Kore ("daughter")
The Romans first heard of her from the Aeolian and Dorian cities of Magna Graecia, and so in Roman mythology she was called Proserpina.
Many modern scholars have argued that Persephone's cult was a continuation of Neolithic or Minoan goddess-worship.
Also, modern 'mother goddess' references.

Despite popular belief, Hecate was not originally a Greek goddess. The place of origin of her cult is uncertain, but it is thought that she had popular cult followings in Thrace. Her most important sanctuary was Lagina, a theocratic city-state in which the goddess was served by eunuchs.

According to legend, Persphone was the daughter of Athena. One day the god of the underworld, Hades kidnapped her & then later married her. Every 6 months, she would return to the earth & every living thing would grow back with such vigor; when she would return to Hades, everything would die & wither away. So, in layman's terms; her legend describes the 4 seasons of the year (Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter).
