You need to view "full headers". With a yahoo account, there's a button bottom right of the screen which you can click on to reveal the path that the email took to get to you.

You will then see something like this:

X-Apparently-To: XXXXX via 217.146.182.63; Tue, 15 May 2007 16:54:09 +0000
X-Originating-IP: [206.190.56.45]
Return-Path: Received: from 206.190.56.45 (HELO n5a.bullet.re4.yahoo.com) (206.190.56.45) by mta143.mail.ukl.yahoo.com with SMTP; Tue, 15 May 2007 16:54:09 +0000
Received: from [68.142.230.28] by n5.bullet.re4.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 15 May 2007 16:54:04 -0000
Received: from [216.252.107.89] by t1.bullet.re2.yahoo.com with NNFMP; 15 May 2007 16:54:04 -0000

Then launch an MSDOS box (Start->Run "cmd") and type
nslookup and the IP address you are interested in. Eg:

nslookup 206.190.56.45
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existent domain
*** Default servers are not available
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.0.1

Name: n5a.bullet.re4.yahoo.com
Address: 206.190.56.45

So the email I got claims to have originated inside the yahoo system, which I expect, since it was an email from yahoo answers.

No, not from the email address alone. Now if you have recieved an email from them that's a different matter. Check the header and it will contain the senders IP. It's easy then to narrow downb where the IP address originated from but it's not very accurate, only giving a general geographical location.

what ali said is right, you can under certain condition, but it is not always true (exact)

open your yahoo mail and right click on the message. select show full header.

copy all that you have and paste it on this site

no, it originated at yahoo. it won't go any further than that. if you want more info than that you'd have to get a subpoena against yahoo. good luck!
