I've been perming my hair thrice a year for thirteen years now. Apart from not eating healthy, I scarcely drink water. You can imagine how my hair was. It had splits not only on the ends but at times in the middle. I also had to deal with flaking since my skin and scalp were so dry. I was hoping it would grow out but it didn't because I was dehydrated.
I used L'oreal Kerastase. It's really good. Well, initially I used the wrong type because people at the salon thought that since my hair was light brown, it was dyed; because Filipinos are inherently blessed only with black colored hair. I am a natural brunette and sufficed to say, It didn't work. Then I complained about it and they treated me to the green Kerastase line which was for dry and damaged hair. A few sessions and it worked wonders! It is a little pricy though but really worth it. If you dye your hair then use the orange line.
For maintenance they told me to buy a "light" shampoo and conditioner. I opted to use their shampoo and Dove conditioner. I do still perm my hair but it is curly and soft now. Plus I made it a point to drink more water than I normally would.

OK so I totally had the same problem when I was in highschool. We had well water which killed my hair on top of all the dying and perming. The best product I have found that actually feels and looks like it works is clairol Infusium23. Even after just one use you will definitely be able to tell the difference. It is a little more expensive then normal shampoo and conditioner but obviously for a reason. Good luck

I got my husband to use a hair product called CHI. You can buy it at most JCPenney salons. He had really dry hair and now it is very soft. It comes with a shampoo, conditioner and an oil that you put in after your wash your hair. If you buy your hair care products at a store like Wak-mart or K-mart, they can't guarantee the ingredients in the product. If you purchase at a salon, they guarantee it and if it doesn't work you can return it and try something different. Good luck.

Put a bit of aloe vera gel in your shampoo and wash as usual, follow by a deep conditioner (Garnier Fructis Deep Conditioner is very good).

Pantene Restoritives made a HUGE difference for my hair. It took about 3 weeks, but my hair has made a drastic turnaround. I use the anit-frizz kind since my hair is damaged and frizzy, but it is so much softer and shinier now.

If your hair is this damaged, you can try to hide it with conditioners, hats, etc., but the only way to truly get rid of the damage is to let it grow out.
