A Shure SM series mic requires "Phantom" power and would probably not work with a computer.

An sm58 absolutely WILL work on your PC. The Cable you will need is an XLR male to 1/4" jackcable, and a 1/4" to 1/8" mono adaptor.
If you are serious about making music on your laptop, you should think about getting an Audio interface (an external sound card). This is usually a USB device, into which you can plug full size Mic leads, instruments and other sound sources, even a midi keyboard. They usualy come with software too, and will give infinitely superior results. I recommend the Tascam US122; it's brilliantly simple, and simply brilliant.
But, you can work just with the mic plugged into the mic input on your laptop- and the SM58 is a superb, robust vocal mic.
I have used many different mics(I'm a professional singer), and still keep coming back to the SM58.
email me if you need advice, and in the meantime- ENJOY!

You probably have an XLR cable with your SM58. The one side has 3 holes that plug in to the back of the MIC, and the other end has 3 pegs that normally plug into an XLR MIC IN line on a mixer.
What you need to get is an XLR to 1/4 inch cable like this one:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_horizon_hz_series_cable_female_xlr_to_male_14?full_sku=336121%2e001%2e082
Then all you need is a 1/4 inch to 1/8" miniplug adapter like this one:
http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_planet_waves_18_stereo_male_to_14_female_adapter?full_sku=335219
Plug the 1/8" miniplug into your computer's MIC/LINE IN plug and your done!
Hope this helps. Good luck!

SM58 or any other mic use the XLR cable. this is the big XLR cable - you will need to get a stereo-mini to XLR adaptor for using in laptop like mine
Part Number 35-466 on this page:
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/adapters-xlr.html
then you just need a stereo-mini(male) to stereo-mini(male)
cable [headphone audio extension cable] to connect to laptop's mic port. Please get a 0.5m short cord for extension - too long is not worth the mess!
But do note that the SM58 ....it is going to be quite "soft" in volume and the sensivity of mic may be as good as using the original XLR cables.
What i do is i have an external Behringer Mic Tube Amp (2-port-2mics) this little guy uses XLR inputs and outputs. I advice you to get this Amplifier for better performance... as close to when I using my Marantz Karaoke CD player.

the problem june with this mic is it has a hi-fi connection normally used for plugging into seperate system tape decks
however to use this on your laptop you need to purchase a 3.5mm converter ,this will convert your current mic plug into a plug that will fit in your sound card
you can pick these up at your local eletric shop or hi-fi shop, just take your mic with you and say you need to convert it to a 3.5mm plug, they will know what you mean
once you have the converter, then plug your mic into the socket with the mic icon under it
then just to make sure its working ok,go to sound and multimedia in control panel, and then to the voice tab,in there you can run a test to check your microphone, you will be asked to talk in there, and if everything is fine just click ok
however june,may i suggest another microphone,the LabTec Stereo 342 Headphones with mic(http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6765394/Trail/C%24cip%3D50277.Office%2C%2BPC%2Band%2Bphones%3EC%24cip%3D50298.PC%2Bperipherals%2Band%2Baccessories%3EC%24cip%3D50306.PC%2Bmicrophones%2Band%2Bheadsets.htm)
these may be also headphones but with a excellent built in mic and fully p.c comaptible, these are a bargain for only £12-99.and you can also use these for other tasks such as online gaming and you can even get free telephone if you go to http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/helloagain.html,and download the skype software free of charge, once you install this and set up your headphones and mic you will be ready to make free calls
good luck!

Microphones for PCs require a polarising voltage supplied by the PC and so are not compatible with singers type mics. Sorry but you need a PC mic. Try your computer dealer.

My Compaq has a ordinary miniature dynamic microphone jack (not the expert-sized one million/4 inch form), top next to the ordinary miniature earphone jack, the two top up front. if your computing gadget would not, the USB form may be your in basic terms option.
