Absolutely normal practice. A patient's records and test results are strictly theirs under confidentiality and HIPAA laws. If she would like she can sign a confidentiality waiver that allows you to call in and get her results, and she can revoke the waiver any time she chooses.

As others have said this is normal. You should appreciate this policy. What if some random person called and asked for such private and personal information. Say for example it was a coworker who might benefit by knowing she will be off work at some time in the future instead of your wife releasing this information when she is ready to.

Or you could be an ex or soon to be ex. They have no way of verifying who you are and what the circumstances may be. You should be glad that they are so tight and glad that something regarding personal info is in this day and age.

The normal way would be that this is no issue. A man waits and she gives the news. There really is not a concievable reason why the guy would call. Well maybe if you are a nice normal couple but you have to admit it is usually the women who is going to want to know at the first possible moment as she is going to be carrying the child around.

You calling just speaks of there being some sort of issue to the doctors.

Yes they will only give results to the patient, doctor-patient confidentiality is absolute.

Let's say that a woman went in for an STD test, or pregnancy test, and a man claiming to be her husband called and got the results. Because he found out she was cheating/pregnant he kills her. Does that sound like something doctors want to be responsible for?

Normally when she fills out her paperwork- there is a form where she lists those people that can have access to her info. or those people who can call for test results. I just did this last week. If your wife listed you on those forms you should be able to. If she wants you to get the results she needs to call the doctor and see if she can add you to that list.

yup, this is doctor patient confidentiality. The HIPA laws protect this from occuring. She or another doctor are the only ones that can get those results. In fact she needs to sign a release form in order for even another doctor to view those results.

Yes it is. It's confidential information that can only be discussed with your wife unless she request a release form from the doctor giving them permission to discuss her medical and lab test with you. She has to request it in order for them to tell you anything, it doesn't matter that you're married. Read all about it in the HIPAA Laws, which is a handbook the clinic or hospital can provide.

Your wife's Dr. office is following the law. While HIPPA can be a pain in the butt, it does help protect our information in the medical arena.

There's a great website which explains HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) at: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/irb/what_is_hipaa.htm which explains the guidelines.

PS What were her results?

Most Dr's offices have a form she can sign which releases medical information to whomever is on that list. May be a good idea for her to ask for that form so you will not have this frustration in the future.
