I have a small turtle I bought on the street in a little tank about a year ago. Since then she has not grown very much and I noticed recently that she is not opening her eyes. I believe she has contracted some kind of infection from bacteria in the water which was not being changed adequately. I have taken over her care and put rocks in the tank so she can have some "dry time". Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do for her eyes? Anything over the counter or home remedy would be appreciated. Thank you.

first of all hunny good for you takeing on a animal whop has not had the best care now time to shiow it proper care,
First buy some suppliment to make them wantto eat goto a Pet Smart or a PETCO they hay have the right stuff and buy some ZOOMED REPTI TURTLE EYE DROPS, we bought some for our baby red ear slider and he got healthy right away cleared up the infection, Be sure to check his shell right away for soft spots if he does get him to vet to get him treated for shell rot. It is not good for turtles and can eventually kill them,
good luck

Eye infections are the result of a combination of poor diet, bad housing, and/or stress.

The first step is to fix the housing-make sure the tank fits her needs-
- big- at least 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of shell length
- warm- heated to about 75-80F (while she is ill, boost this another 5 degrees)
- clean- usually with a BIG filter
- safe, comfortable basking heated to about 90F
- cooler, shady hiding spot
- good diet of a mix of pellets and live or frozen 'fish foods' like krill, shrimp, worms, etc.

You can learn about the cares needed at a site like http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

Now- once that is going well, the next things to do are:
- boost temps as mentioned above
- use either a commercial 'turtle sulfa dip' product or a fish product called 'stress coat'- but not both
- let the turtle rest as much as possible
- keep the water clean with a good filter- not stressful water changes

NOTE: 'turtle eye drops' do not work, nor do calcium blocks or sulfa blocks in the water.

Hello..just might be too late for the little guy if it hasn't had proper care for a year or so...they need worms...but most importantly they need UV lighting - plant grow light..basking temps around 80 degrees warm...you might try a fish or pet store ( like petsmart...) that might have some antibiotic meds for fish & aquatics...which would work for water turtle as well ..Take Care :)
