among the anti-viruses the 'windows defender' is the most recommended for vista a it's from Microsoft itself
you can also use AVG 7.5 Professional
among the anti-spy wares the 'spy sweeper' is most recommended,also the 'windows live one care' is good for all kind of registry and spyware scanning as it's also from Microsoft

I use Avast! 4 Home Edition. Why? Because it uses heuristics.

Heuristic analysis allows avast! to protect you against unknown viruses and worms based on the suspicious behaviour noticed taking place inside your computer.

Other antiviruses, whenever they stumble upon unknown files just ignores them.
