Yeah, they are inflated with taxes. About a buck a gallon.
Other than that, like any other product, the manufacturer will charge whatever they can get away with. It's called capitalism, and it's taught in Economics classes in most high schools.
Normally in a capitalistic country, other competitors would jump into the market and drive prices down with competition. Well, your tree hugging politicians have bogged industry down with so many regulations, that they have made that impossible to do.
Are gas prices falsely inflated? Yeah, by taxes and regulations.

If you had a business that supplied a product that nearly every family in the US used and you were the only supplier of that product ...... wouldn't you push the prices as high as you could for as long as you could? I know I would.
Oil companies have us trapped. They know we want oil/gasoline. They have it all. They will sell it to us .... but they will also tell us what the price will be and there isn't one thing we can do to stop them from jacking the price up.
The only thing we can do is stop buying/using so much of that product they want to sell us. It isn't false inflation. That is, after all, what the market price is.

If demand went down so would prices. But people continue to buy cars/suvs/trucks that consume ungodly amounts of fuel.
The gas companies make huge profits, but we as a society do not feel it necessary to change our consumption habits. Therefore, we are at the gas companies' mercy.
Some day (if we are lucky) the average american will be driving a fuel efficient compact car as opposed to an SUV.

If they do not, they are horribly naive. There has not been a new refinery built in 28 years, and the demand is high enough to do it, but the oil companies do not want to increase the supply, because the price of gas would drop considerably.

The 'ol mighty dollar rules again.
Now that Walmart is upset that shoppers are spending less in their stores, the price of gas will drop in a few weeks. I tell you, we are all under control of the big industry. sigh..
