Hey FC: My favorite Michener book is "Tales of the South Pacific" where the musical and movie came from. It fleshes out the familiar story of Nelly Forbush, Bloody Mary, Luther Billis and the rest and helps us understand what's going on behind the scenes in the movie. He based a lot of the book on his own experiences during World War II. It's also one of his shortest books. And just so you know, the musical is being revivied on Broadway opening next January and I heard that Scarlett Johanson is on the short list to play Nelly. That will be one hot ticket.

I actually have 3 of his books that I consider favorites.

Chesapeake--I used to live in Maryland.
Centennial--I live in Pennsylvania (where some of the characters are from, and have lived in the West).
The Source--love it for the history.

I enjoy the history woven into his stories.

I love them all (that I've read to this point at least) but I guess Chesapeake is my favorite because I read it first.
