What actions can I take if this person is spreading vicious untrue rumors about me to other co-workers (including my boss) and also to other places that I could potentially be employed? Do I need to consult a lawyer, and if so, can you point me to one? Thank you all for your time.

If anyone else has more answers to this I am open. Right now, we're doing nothing, and I don't know if this is the best course of action.

You may try to sue this person for slander, yes, but that takes considerable effort and time, as well as money. Remember - you have to protect your reputation now, not after it is ruined. You won't be able to restore it fully even when - and if - you win the slander case. People will still talk, you know.

You really need to take matters into your own hands and stop this before it hurts you too much. Act decisively and without remorse. You may do unethical things, but what the hell? This person is slandering you for some reason and must realise that there are consequences involved. There are three ways of action if you find yourself a target for slander:

- Threat. Make the slanderer understand that you will break their legs, burn down their house, kill their family, or make their life miserable in any other way. If threatened effectively, they will shut up.

- Physical destruction. Hire a hitman to rub out the slanderer or do it yourself. No person - no probelm.

- Ruining their reputation before they ruin yours. Devise a plan to make the slanderer look foolish so that nobody believes them, or embarrassed to such an extent that they will stop spreading rumors about you, afraid of being laughed at; dig up some dirt about them (everyone has a skeleton in their closet) and use it against them... There are many ways to achieve this goal.

Any of the three is quite efficient. Pick one, depending on your beliefs, moral standards and habits. The choice is yours. Only remember one thing: this person declared war on you by telling others nasty stuff about you, as the French saying goes, a la guerre com a la guerre!

Good luck!

It sounds like you've the makings of a slander and/or defamation case here, but there are potential issues. First, simply making untrue statements is not grounds for liability. The person making the statements must know that they are false. Second, even if they do make such untrue statements, courts award compensation based on actual injuries, so unless you can demonstrate that you have been materially injured by this person's conduct, you have no case. "Potential loss of employment" generally isn't a cognizable injury in the eyes of the court, so unless you've actually not been hired, you'll have a hard time convincing the court that your injuries are deserving of compensation. You can try for something like an intentional infliction of emotional distress claim, but the behavior will have to be really bad and the injury will have to be really big--you'll probably need a diagnosable medication condition.

Right now it doesn't sound like you've got a case yet. Either way, you're going to want to retain the services of an attorney. I recommend FindLaw: http://www.findlaw.com/

You can sue that person for slander. Slander is spoken words that are untrue and spoken with malicious intent.

And I can't point you to a lawyer since I don't know where you are, but I am sure you can call the state Bar Association in whatever state you reside and they can help you find a good lawyer that can assist you.

Good luck!

You may not want to sue if that's not for you or if you dont what it to go that far but I would do something before it spreads further
Try telling your boss whats going on so he can put a stop to it and possibly fire that other person so you have no more worries.
Also you could just get a lawyer and take matters into your own hands just to get it over with.
Good luck.

whoever said first amendment rights stuff...

you're only guaranteed amendment rights as long as you're not impeding someone else's rights. And because we're in this country, you have a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness or freedom or whatever.

So yea, slap them with slander and get some witnesses together.

Oh, connecting this slander to not being able to be hired will be tricky too. Get a good lawyer :)

You could try and sue them for slander but pretty tough when our first amendant rights give us the free right to speech and assembly.

If you have proof that they are slandering you, then you can build a case against them and take them to court and sue.
