For example, Myspace. I'm talking about numbers in the 200-800 range or more. Would you say most of these digital "friends" are simply acquaintances?

yes. It is same thing that motivates people to collect pokemon cards or level in WoW. Collecting for the sake of collecting.

No way you can maintain a meaningfull connection with 100+ people.

I'm not an expert but I would say that many of the "friends" are simply acquaintances (or maybe they don't speak at all), and I guess that a person would want to gain hundreds of "friends" in cyberspace (Myspace, Facebook, etc) because they feel the need to be popular, they are trying to "network" for some particular reason, or they may lack confidence. They should instead be content with the amount of friends that they truly have instead of gaining friends for the sake of it.

I have to admit I'm no expert but generally the motivation (in my opinion) is to gain a sense of self-worth, to feel that your loved and to gain a satisfaction "knowing" that you have gained more "friends" then others. Depending on the individual however I would say its highly probable that some people may feel they have formed an unusually close friendship with some or many of these cyberfriends. Personally I don't think its particularly healthy and doesnt promote good communicational skills which are neccesary in the real world.

I think it is almost sad that so many people are developing these cyber friends instead of being social and making friends the old fashioned way. I don't think it's wrong to have cyber friends, but you never really know you you are talking to for sure. I'm just afraid that young people aren't developing social skills anymore because they spend so much time on the computer. Nothing can take the place of face to face meetings. Just my opinion.
