The best basis for a good writing career is a well-read mind. Keep reading, do well in school and experiment with your writing. Keep a writing journal. Join a writing group if there are any available in your city. I assume you're a student; my city has a number of youth-writing programs. The options increase when you're older, as there are countless writing workshops and groups situated all over the place. They're worth looking into.
Good luck!

You need to have a passion to write. If you want to be a writer, just sit down and start typing whatever comes out of your head. That's a start.
Once you have your book written (unless it is non fiction) you then need to edit it. Then after that, start researching in the book The Writer's Market for publishers and agents.
You should make your book the best it is, but it doesn't need to have a specific time frame on being written (i.e. 5 years).
If this is for non fiction however, you could write a proposal of your book and then send it out to see if anyone bites. If you get someone interested, then you need to write it, and probably write it quickly.
Good luck.

I also love to write and have found a great website to start me on my journey. They do not publish books, but will publish your artlicel, opinion/editorial, review, etc. on any topic and pay you for it. You can also network with other writers that have published books in the forums. Check it out, if interested. It's a great way to make some extra cash while you are working on your book.

Honey, you can't just get up one day and announce; "I love writing! I wanna be a writer!!" No. It's not easy to make a book like THAT. There is a lot of work to do in the process of writing a book. First off, slow down. Next, sit down in a chair and write what comes to you. Good luck.

You start writing in school. I know, it sounds dumb, but right now most authors are coming out of schools, colleges and premier writing programs.
Write at home, practice writing, and every single thing you write, whether it's a text message or an assignment, write it well. Make good writing a habit, not something you want to turn on and off. Make it a part of your being.
Find out which schools have good writing programs and make sure your grades are high enough that you can get into one of these schools. It doesn't mean you will fail if you don't but good writing schools have the reputation for a reason.

Becoming a great writer is a full time job. Reading and writing should play a major role in your daily life. Start with writing stories that come natural to you.

Write short stories and publish them on online fiction forums. You'll be surprised at the amount you can learn from the feedback you recieve. This is better than showing them to friends and family members because you'll be seen by people who are interested in the kind of stories you write, instead of being interested in you. Some places will be more harsh than others, try www.fictionpress.com and take a look around.

I have 4 novels published...
Basically, the 'rules' are these.
1/ Apply your butt to the chair.
2/ Write
3/ Re-write
4/ Re-write
5/ Re-write
6/ Re-write
7/ Re-write
8/ Do this for 5 years for your first book.
Then, only when you feel the book is 100% finished, approach a publishers.
Good luck.
