When my husband died, my so called in the flesh friends DID show up for the memorial and said over and over "We'll be there, call us whenever you need us, blah, blah, blah."
In the weeks and months that followed, they disappeared. They were not there when I needed them. It was my internet friends that got me thru that dark time

Ask him if he were on the Internet if he would still be a therapist.

I disagree. I've met ten of my friends over the internet. I wouldn't give up any of them for anything in the world.

I believe what your therapist is trying to say is that you run a high risk of people abusing the chance of friendship online. People are often pyschologically different online. They feel they can be who they want to be online. For instance, I'm not the least bit shy online. However, IRL I'm so shy I can barely stand it. I have a huge social anxiety disorder.

But, my point is, internet friends are the same as people you meet on the street... potential friends. It's really up to the particular people.

Strongly disagree. Your therapist may not be aware of it (yet) but it's the virtual community that's slowly taking it over from the real one. And nothing wrong with that, either. It's the same thing, different form.

Disagree. I have met people online then met them later in life. I swear you can know someone only online and know them better than a person you know offline.

Maybe your therapist is old and out of touch with the way our younger generation interacts with eachother.

Whatever. Any contact with other friendly people counts! (I am a licensed Psychologist) I have internet friends that I have known for several years and we are tight. And we've never met in person!

they for sure are not the same as having a real in the flesh friend. but that does not make them not a friend

I agree. They have no impact on your real life. At least they shouldn't have an impact on your real life. You need real friends, that you can touch and see! I mean, it's okay to have internet friends, but not at the expense of real friends.
