I did the same while studying math(rock of course). When studying other subjects, I couldnt play the music because it was distracting trying to read while listening to lyrics.(classical worked though). If it doesnt hurt your studies, do whatever works. A friend and I used to study together in college while drinking martinis and smoking herb. We both graduated with honors. Do what works for you.

I work in an noisy environment and find that listening to music works for me when I need to concentrate. I do find that music with lyrics can distract me sometimes so often I listen to instrumental and classical music. I do prefer rock the rest of the time though!

At first, it may seem like it could relax you and put you into the mood. But if it contains vocals that you know well, you will most likely start singing along and lose your focus. From my own experience, music that I know so well will only distract me. So I would advocate listening to soft instrumental music only. And even then, turn the volume down. Way down.

I do it all the time. but i mostly listen to music without lyrics or trance type of music - if it's got lyrics and stuff i want to sing and will spend more energy listening to the music than writing

If it has not affected your results then I don't see why you shouldn't listen to it whilst studying. I personally can't do it, I get distracted by it and start singing along :p

I listen to classical...but I don't advise it...It's affect can be too soothing to the inexperienced listener causing him(her) to fall asleep.
