I am!
Music -- in particular hip-hop -- is my life! I'm able to function just fine. In my case, it doesn't have a negative effect on my life, though I imagine it differs for each individual.

Of course. Some addictions are less common than others, but anything that inspires a desired feeling (euphoria, numbness, altered consciousness, what ever) can be addictive to that person. Gambling, running, sex, weight lifting, drugs, whatever may hold no fascination for one person, but be addictive to another. When I played volleyball competitively, I had friends calling me up like junkies to try to get a game together, almost everyday of the week!
As to what it can do to you mentally - it might give you the relaxation and outlet you crave. Or, taken to an extreme, I suppose anything can be harmful.

Ancient Indian musicians have explained music as something that comes from the innermost soul in you. It is a sound that soothes your mind and body and conveys the most complicated feelings of your mind. As such, it has a great impact on the mind and attitude of a person. As a staunch fan of carnatic music and a learner too, i've experienced that elated feeling whenever i sing or hear certain ragas being sung or feel sad. Getting into the web woven by a certain raga and getting engrossed into it and finding something new in it every time is nothing but music addiction. Music is a very powerful object. It has a lot of control over some very important parts of our brain. It has been proven scientifically that a person who is addicted to music has a mild and sensitive and patient sort of character. Music is something that connects us with divinity and we feel it in the very breath of our raga.
After all this, don't you say that addiction to music is powerful?? :-)

Absolutely,
Studies have shown that different types of music(and sound for that matter) has different effects on brain activity, because of this a person may feel better when listening to a certain type of music and may contiuosly need it in order to function "properly"
Some side effects besides the obvious physical problems(hearing problems, loss of friends etc.) If a person is succeptable to suggestive language they may start to act out what they deem is acceptable behavior, such as a person addicted to Country/western music buying a pickup and cowboy boots.

Sure, I think people can get addicted to anything. I can't see why it would have a negative affect unless it made you stop doing everything else except listen to music.Actually music can be very therapeutic as well.
