My gas was turned off -- it is now back on but the hot water heater is not working. The gas works on my stove and on my dryer. Is there a reset switch or could it just be the pilot light?

With most hot water heaters, there is a specific process to turn it back on. Most stoves today work without pilot lights, the same goes for gas dryers.
On the hot water heater, near the base, there is a grey box, usually with a red knob.
The knob needs to be turned to "pilot", and held down, while the pilot light is lit. Continue holding the button down for about 45 seconds, to clear any air in the line, and to let the thermocouple warm up. When you release the read knob, the pilot light should stay lit. If it does not, try again. Once the pilot light is lit, and stays lit when you release the red knob, then you can turn the red knob to the "on" position, and this will allow the water heater to operate.
When your gas was turned back on, the utility company SHOULD have offered to light the water heater for you. Most utilities WILL send someone out to light it, if you call them. IF there is something wrong with your pilot light, they can also diagnose it pretty quickly, because they work with them every day.

MODERN hot water heaters have piezoelectric igniters, so you should just be able to turn the gas on, press the button, and away it goes. HOWEVER if you have an type with the continuously burning pilot light, you have to light the pilot light after you turn on the gas. If you DON"T know how to do it, be safe and find someone that DOES know how to do it.

Sounds like a pilot light to me. I used to live in an appartment where the pilot light would go out on my hot water heater and my furnus if I open the door incorrectly on a windy day.

Turn the control to pilot. Press the knob in and hold a fire source (I use a stick of spaghetti) at the pilot opening. Once it lights, hold the knob in for about one minute. Release the knob and see if it stays lit. If so, turn the control knob to on. If the pilot goes out, it is probably the thermocouple and you will need to replace it. Probably lots of air in the lines so it may take a while to get it purged out.

you'll have to relite the pilot light there should be instuctions on the side of the water heater, usually you turn it on to a certain point stick a match to it then turn it up to where the tempature should be . .

It is going into "Energy Saver" mode. Just turn on a hot water tap for a few minutes when you first get home to "wake it up" and you will get a nice hot shower in 20 minutes or so. Bert

mine did the same thing yester=day turns out u need to flip the red GAS shut off swicth, turn it on if that dose not work try the fuse box
