Besides the beats what makes a good song is good lyrics and when the band plays the song you can tell that they actually believe in what they are playing. You also of course have to have someone that can sing well, if the singer is bad that can ruin a good song.

A good song requires a good beat, and rythm.. Like the other guy said, it needs to able to trigger a good emotional response.. I don't understand how people can discourage a good song because of the lyrics.. If we were to judge every song by the lyrics prescribed to them the music industry would be in trouble especially country where every story is the depiction of depression, "my dog ran away, my girlfriend left me, my truck got busted, I love beer and bodonkaka donk." Gimme a break, good songs are those that arouse the expected emotional status to the genre in which they were written.. Occasionally yes, lyrics can be an indication, but for the most part, just listen to the music man, because this is music not literature, you want a good story? Read a book..

You have a loaded question here. I guess I would say conviction would be my basic answer. You write a song for a reason, be sure the song reflects EXACTLY what you mean. As a song writer just be sure not to make a good thing last to long. Even a catchy little melody can get old if you beat it in the ground. Short and sweet with all your conviction, make people believe what you are singing or playing and you get a great song.

I think a good story, if the song doesnt tell a good story then it doesnt hold your interest. A great chorus that is catchy, and the music has to fit the whole thing. Clear singing helps, I hate when you have to look up lyrics to find out what the person is singing

For me it can be a combination of things, but the song has to move me in some way- i.e. the voice of the singer gives me chills, the lyrics resonate with me, or the beat makes me want to dance, etc.

The lyrics, and the point the writer is making. Most of the time when you like a song, it's because you can relate to same situation.

My requirements for a good song is that it makes me feel something, brings an emotional response with it! Whether it be from the music or lyrics, just gotta make me feel something.

The lyrics have to include trucks, mama, prison, trains, and getting drunk. It makes the perfect song. Oh yeah, that one has already been written.

Musical talent (something most artists now-days lack)
lyrics that mean something (and I don't mean lyrics that basically whine about the authors lot in life)
