The reason the population is increasing is because people are living longer. They're living healthier and wealthier than in the past, too. Strangely enough, some people think this is a bad thing.
Despite all the hype it has received, overpopulation really isn't much of a problem. Birthrates in the industrialized world have plummeted to the point where people aren't even having enough children to replace themselves. This is in large part because it's very expensive to raise children in an industrialized society, whereas in a third world agricultural society, children are a net asset: they produce more than they consume, starting at quite a young age.
The reason population is still growing in the industrialized world is because of immigration, not because of birthrates. However, the entire world - industrialized and nonindustrialized - is becoming more prosperous, as measured by per capita income, per capita food production, average lifespan, indeed virtually any measure you can think of. As a result, it seems very likely that third world birthrates will drop to match the birthrates of the industrialized world, as the third world nations continue their economic development.
The real population problem may turn out to be that we have far fewer young workers supporting more and more retirees. However, that's a topic for a different question!

There's nothing to slow it down. We're living longer & better able to cure illnesses. We have an abundance of food, and can transport it anywhere in the world.
