The cheapest way is to buy them when you're in Venice but make your plans in advance (in English-online):

Hope that helps!

Since you have a bit of time I would price check. You can buy a eurorail pass in the states which may be cheaper, but it also may not. Check trenitalia, as someone mentioned. Italians trains are notorious for going on strike so be aware of that also. You might also want to check airlines. You can find better prices there most times. Check airlines from Marco Polo (actually "in" Venezia) and Venice-Treviso. Venice- Treviso is only a few Km's outside Venice and I believe a shuttle runs between the 2.
I do have to disagree about getting lost in Venice, I lived close to Venice for 3 yrs and getting lost was when I saw great things! Buon Viaggio!

It is cheaper to buy tickets for your trip from Venice to Rome here, hard to believe but it is true.Have fun and do not get lost in Venice, I did and it was scary, I could not find anybody who spoke English, fortunately I found some English people with a map.

On the station in Venice where you go onto the platform there are two banks of automatic, multi lingual machines. You can check availability for days in advance. Or buy there and then.
Some advance tickets can have a heavy booking fee attached,

If you don;t have specific date of travel, buy your tickets in Venice train station before departure.
You also can buy them from the conductor in the train.
So don't worry about that.
