I do not know if it is best to install it directly in our compressor room or to have it just outside in the entry room.

The station doesn't do any good if it's in the location of a NH3 release since you wouldn't be able to breathe in there. I would put it outside the building.

Before you go to the expense of installation, perhaps in the wrong place, why don't you contact OSHA to see what their requirements are?

Check with the Safety engineer for such things. There are OSHA guidelines (if you are in USA) and similar guidelines in other countries.
