How about some tools. Its kinda hard when you don't know the person...so some suggestions maybe look at something he needs. Has he mentioned or pointed out at something that he really needs? If you can't find anything, i know its kinda cheese, but a gift card from like a hardware store. You did mention he is a carpenter maybe he can get something he needs from there. Good luck...
