Craftsman lawnmowers like most all 4 stroke combustion engines will burn valves up. This is why most lawn service company's will use two cycle mowers that give them mopre performance and less maintenance saving them tons of dollars.
Your Tecumseh engine sounds to me that your losing compression on the intake valve.
Just remove the valve and shave off about .003 off the stem and put it back in and you will see your compression rise up.
When you start a lawnmower when it is cold it will crank, but once it gets hot it loses compression from the intake valve.
Sometimes the valve will move just before top dead center when it should stay put and that causes loss of compression especially in a hot engine.
You turn it off and then it won't crank back up. Sure sign of a valve clearance problem.
NOW....one more thing to check, your Tecumseh carburetor has a hex nut underneath the bowl with an adjust screw, Remove that nut with the screw if it has one, but not the bowl. carefully take the screw out and run a thin wire from an electric cord through the tiny holes on the side of it. There will be one small hole at angle on the nut you will see it when you take it out. If that small hole gets clogged, your lawnmower will run and quit, run and quit it won;t stay running.
Good Luck

Well then, start with thinking more basically. Use your Aristotle: What is this thing's essence, what does it do? Cuts grass. No that is incidental, what does it do... spins a blade! Yes and what does it need to do this? GAS! Is there gas in it? Then if so, can the gas get to the spark plug? Is there a spark plug installed? It also needs AIR for combustion to occur. Is the carburetor air filter clogged with old grass or oil mess? Think step by step how the gas and air mixture reaches the piston, and you will get to the problem's solution.

Probably just needs some general maintenance. Replace the spark plug, $2 and oil $2. Check underneath and make sure there is nothing slowing the blade from turning, like string. Clean out the air filter. If this all fails, take it in to have it serviced.

Sounds like fuel starvation. Clean the carb and the fuel pick up in the gas tank. If this doesn't work, it's probably the valves.

Try holding back the choke about halfway for a minute or two. You might also look at replacing the fuel filter.
