No, but you'll need to be hooked up to a good outside aerial.

No, but check that you can get Freeview in your area first. Also, you need a better digital signal than you do for analogue TV. You will almost certainly need an outside aerial. The stick aerial it comes with is useless unless you live next to the trasnsmitter. With analogue TV as the signal weakens the picture gradually gets snowier until no longer watchable. With digital there is a sudden point at which the signal is too weak to be usable. This is called the edge of the cliff effect. Even with a good outdoor aerial you may not get all Freeview channels because until the analogue is switched off, some freeview channel groups are being transmitted out- of -band and need a wideband aerial to receive them. Also digital is not on full power yet until analogue is switched off. Here is a link to help you.

Hope this helps.

No u do not need this to be hooked on internet if u are not setting up online security surveillance. I bought my avermedia HD hybrid + FM volar (USB) for S$135. (cheapest I can find with all in, digital/analog/FM/teletext/remote/antenna) It work very well, there is a choice of digital signal for HD transmission reception and analog signal reception. However, I have to download driver for my Vista OS as the provided driver was only updated to XP ready. P.S. U must make sure ur PC/Laptop meets the min requirement for the tunner.
See the link below for comparison and prices

I have to add on the hooking on to outside aerial or cable will be great for analog, but if the signal is weaker and u use the provided antenna, most likely u can only watch digital if ur local station transmit digital. (Digital signal give u clear receptions but if signal is bad, u will get picture that pauses alot).

Maybe you will need the internet at one point to download the latest drivers for this device, but after that it shouldn't need it.
Also, I echo the other people's comments - if you can't hook up your laptop to a decent outdoor aeriel (like the one to your main TV) don't bother. The mini aeriels rarely work.
