Consultants do not necessarily work for one company. They are typically hired to look at a specific issue a company is having and work on an hourly basis. There is a good future for it, but you need to gain some experience first. Most consultants have a few years in whatever consultant field before becoming a consultant. A software consultant may have 3 - 5 years of experience with Java or VB or C# before going in to software consulting.

to consult in the software field you would have to know everything there is to know about the software package. like windows Xp, Vista, Linux networking,

Now the great opportunities that are arising in software these days is Linux, Now it is becoming more popular, and my advice to you is learn that, you will be able to earn big money in the future,

Linux is free to download so it will not cost you a red cent to start learning it, there are lots of free E- books on the internet

Linux is used in big Business and is now being introduced to the general public. It is better than windows Xp, and Vista.

do some research into Linux operating systems the easiest linux to learn is :-
ubuntu the other to learn is Suse Linux. this would be a great opportunity for you, you will be getting in on the ground floor, with the opportunities wide open

michele said it right by what a consulant is. does it have a bright future???? i strongly believe so. Computers will be here for many years and what do you need to be productive on a computer????? Software and long as you need software there will always be a market for consultants.
