I read that when you go on maternity leave you get statutory maternity pay that is 90% of your weekly salary for the first 6 weeks, then £112.10 per week for the remaining period. Is that right or do you get anything else?

you will get smp at the rate you said, you will get child benefit, which you can apply for as soon as the baby is born and will be back dated for 3 months only so get your claim in asap after birth, it is £71.75 every 4 weeks. I think you can apply to have it weekly if you want though. You will also be able to apply for child tax credit and working tax credit, as although you are on leave you are still classed as working. Look at www.hmrc.gov.uk to find out how to apply for these. And as already stated depending on your circumstances you may be able to claim for a 1 off payment of £500 from the sure start maternity grant. Go to www.jobcentreplus.co.uk and click on the make a claim link to find out the criteria you need to match.
Dont forget if your baby was due on or after April 1st of this year you get 39 paid weeks smp.
Hope this helps.

That is roight but it depends on your employer, there is also OMP (occupational maternity pay) which is paid by your employer, however if you do not go back to work for them after your mat leave finishes you have to pay all this back. I work for the NHS and got 90% of my pay for 6 months

I believe that is just about the whole thing. It is actually pretty generous when you consider there is no such thing in the US, at least not worded that way.
