There were about 300,000 total deaths on each side. The numbers are argued over but a safe bet is close to 100K killed in action per side, with the rest lost to disease, infections, etc.

The Confederate states had about 250000 deaths of which about 40% were direct troop deaths in battles. That was less than the Northern casualties.

as you can see from the variety of answers you are getting, no one really knows. Confederate records were destroyed, some by accident, some on purpose.

Records were not good at that time, but probably over 300,000.
The total dead is estimated at over 600,000, by far the costliest war we have ever fought, including BOTH world wars.
