rather than me sucking on a hose, is there some kind of a simple hand operated pump for sucking it out of the gas tank.

Yes, there's one that has a clear hose and an orange pump on the end of it that helps draw it up till a siphon is created and the pull of gravity helps pour the rest into your lawn mower. There are also some drill operated ones and even some battery operated ones. Look around where they sell gas tanks around your local department store.

Yes they do sell some sort of pump siphon but they don't work that well. Here is another Idea that works for me. Take a piece of garden hose about 10 ft. long (enough to fit to the bottom of your car gas tank) .Stuff a rag around the gas tank opening and the hose. Press on the rag with your hand and then blow air into the tank(you have created a vacuum) and gas should flow out the hose if you fail the first time try again you may not have had a good enough seal.
Good luck, Ed.S.

I understand not wanting to suck on the hose. I use a clear
plastic tubing. Blow into it till you hear heavy bubbling. Have
3 or 4 feet hanging out of the tank so you can see the gas
coming in plenty of time. I sure wouldn't want to use anything
that gives of sparks like electric motors ect,
