Where should I start, do I need a plumber?

My water bill - usually $80 quarterly, has jumped to a $270 quartly bill. It appears to be water leak/running somewhere . Do I call a plumber because the problem is not visually obvious to me and I'm wondering if plumbers have a technique that would search all the water lines, find and solve this problem - is this possible?

call the water company And have them ck. the meter. if there are no leakes there then call a plumber

Before you call a plumber:

1. Look at your last bill. Compare the price of a gallon of water from the cheap bill to the expensive bill. Did you actually use 4 times more water, or did the price per gallon go up?

2. Go outside and look at your meter to see if the numbers match what is on your bill. If you have any problems reading it outside, see if there's a website for your water company.

3. If 1 and 2 don't help you, a plumber will be your best bet; thhe will know where to look. (Though they will check the obvious water sources first.) A leak under your house can lead to mold, so be careful!

The leak may very well be underground, in the crawl space etc. First you may want to call your water utility co. Sometimes they will help or at least advise. Yes a good plumbing co. has several ways to find leaks no matter where they are. Do call someone because "things you cant see" are notorious for causing additional damage "you can't see."

With all water using fixtures shut off (including a humidifier if you have one) check the water meter. There should be a small triangle that will show small amounts of water usage. If it is moving, you have water running somewhere. Check the level of water in all your toilet tanks to see if water is going out the overflow tube.

You either have a in ground leak, or your neighbors are playing a sneaky trick on you using your meter for there water.
