i keep getting directed to download.com and then after download there's an error message 'invalid application.

Just go to download.com and search for "Lavasoft Ad-Aware." When the results screen comes up, scroll down to the entry for "Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06." Click the link and you're off and running.
