I had to quit my job a year ago between child care costs and gas prices, it was more expensive for me to work than to stay home! If they keep going up I won't be able to finish my education either.

yes, they are that high. Compare the increase of gas prices to wage increase over the last 15 years. Gas prices have more than tripled while minimum wage hasn't even doubled.

What I would really like to see is a Congressional probe into energy prices. I would like to know exactly what is the breakdown of that $4.00 a gallon. How much of it is tax, how much profit, how much cost of manufacturing, etc. I would like to see oil and gas executives answering these questions under oath. Most of all though, I would love to see them explain why prices are so high, yet they still manage to rake in $10 billion a QUARTER.
I find it ironic that congress will make baseball players testify under oath about steroid usage, but when it comes to oil and gas companies, they're more than happy to take their word for it.

There's nobody who doesn't care. There's just not much we can do about it. You can boycott gas, if you want to ride a bicycle or walk everywhere. The thing is, modern living just makes it impossible to not drive a car or use public transportation that uses gas. We have to travel too far to run our lives normally, and there's no way we can become gas independent until we develop an alternative energy source that is as efficient and easy to use as gasoline.

Staying home won't prove a thing. It would take the entire country to manage an effective boycott, and the effort it would take to organize such a boycott would be astronomical.

Also, the President and Congress have no power to lower gas prices. If anything, they are the ones that make gas prices so astronomical with their taxes. Think about it. The gas companies are not the real profiteers here. In fact, some years, the cost of extraction and refining are so high that oil companies make zero to negative profit. On the other hand, the state and federal governments to not have to prospect, drill, extract, refine, ship or sell oil, yet they receive PURE PROFIT from it. If you don't believe me, read the recent news stories about the state of Wisconsin threatening to sue an independent gas station owner because his prices were TOO LOW! If you want to do something about gas prices, write to your congressman and tell him to abolish the gas tax and stop the government's windfall profiteering from gas.

Looking at the people that have answered...Let me guess..all single with no kids. Wait a bit and then tell me you don't care. You all talk about hating tax increases right? So since Bush took over you save what, $600 a year from a tax cut? Now of course you pay to his friends instead of the govt. about an additional 5k a year in gas....do the math for once and realize you are getting ripped off.

Heck yeah, I care. I have put a stop to wasted trips, that's for sure. Unfortunately, elected officials can do nothing about it; gas prices are driven by world economic climate and supply and demand. A boycott will NOT work.

I do not care about the high gas prices. When prices get so high people cannot really afford it, they will stop buying it. When the choice is between food and gas people will chose food. Then and only then will people really begin to use other means of transportation and alternative fuels. As long as gas is the most affordable means of transportation people will continue to use it. Capitalism will take care of the problem if we simply leave things alone.

Gas prices suck, but people still need to get to work. Writing Senators is a good idea, but since gas prices are set by crude oil prices six months ago, it really wouldn't change much.

Yes, I do. Money doesn't´grow on trees.

Some people don't care about high prices. Are the saying the true or, according to Freud, they're just denying it?

My school is across the street, my job is a five minute walk away, as long as gas stays under $10.00 a gallon I'll be just fine.

My boss gets really pissy when I don't show up for work and I pick up food on my way home so I've cut my consumption as low as I can. I guess I could quit my job and stay home all the time but that would just create a new set of problems.
