My microwave began making a loud noise while operating today, and it also stopped heating. It is a GE, and it is about 7 years old. If possible, I would like to fix it myself, rather than call out an expensive repairman. Any one know about microwaves, that could give me some ideas of what might be wrong?

Almost has to be the magnitron tube; and that's not something you can change.

If you are not familiar with microwaves and how they work, I would highly recommened you not even try to open the case... There are high voltages exceeding 25,000 volts that operate in a microwave, also there are high voltage capacitors that will hold a charge even when the microwave is unplugged... For the price of new ones it's not even worth the risk...

Don't fix it yourself. Chances are very good that it's given up the ghost. So get a new microwave: It would be both cheaper and less dangerous than trying to repair it.

do not under any circumstances try to repair a microwave yourself. they are dangerous to mess with even for trained techs. if it's a counter top type it would be cheaper, much cheaper to buy a new one as opposed to fixing it. Take it to a certified tech though.

Danger, not worth it. Save up and get a new one with a warranty.
