9*4 = 36 so what numbers multiplied together give you 36, but added together give you 12? 6, 6
so, 9p^2 + 12p + 4 = 9p^2 + 6p + 6p + 4
group two and two
(9p^2 + 6p) + (6p + 4)
find common factors within each parenthesis
3p(3p + 2) + 2(3p + 2)
(3p + 2)(3p + 2)

3x^3 + 9x^2 + 9x = 3x(x^2 + 3x + 3)
