they were taking themselves seriously and evolving some of the side characters, like brock, mary jane, harry, venom. also the middle allowed for harry to regain his memory so he could get to the bottom of the whale and set up his redemption

I liked it, but thanks for asking! Spider-Man 3 had a number of scenes that were not intended to be serious, which was refreshing and entertaining.
