What Purpose Do The Directional Arrows Serve?
Originally, race conditions dictated that running a tire in a specific direction rolled the tread splice overlap down during operation

There are now two main reasons for directional arrows. The first being that some motorcycle tires now have tread patterns that are designed for a specific rotation for optimum performance, particularly on wet roads. Directional arrows indicate proper directional rotation.

Secondly, running a tire will set up a wear pattern that may cause ride disturbance if reversed. The directional arrow insures that a tire can be re-fitted in the original direction.

Wonderboy may not have said it nicely enough, but he's on the right track. It has to do with the construction and the tread pattern. Many tires are directional. Not all tires are, many of the older patterns are still available.

No website for you, just experience. I read the books, the lables, the fine print, and I do the work. Last year I went to a set of directional tires on the Honda.

There are channels on a tire that direct water away from the area of the tire in contact with the road. If the tire is placed on backwards, the water would be drawn towards this area. The bike could then start to hydroplane; actually riding on top of the water rather than the road. This condition is scary and dangerous in a car, and far deadlier on a motorcycle.
