Normally, It's the first step in the divorce process, called separation. But some people live separately for a while before divorce. Sometimes, people will separate for a while to sort out things and possibly get together again. But it all depends on the situation at hand. They need some space to think alone, and in doing so, solving problems they have had.

There are many reasons why people separate and not divorce. Some religions forbids divorce. Some people don't divorce because it is financially beneficial, the divorce would cost them both too much. Such as, one partner would loose medical benefits that has major medical issues. Another, it protects the person from getting too close to another. You can't get married because you are still married to another. Finally, one or both have a phobia to go through the legal process.

In my experience there are only two reasons for this

1. They are still trying to work the marriage out.

2. They are too cheap to get a divorce. They want to be divorced and are acting like they aren't married but they don't go get the divorce (I see this one more often than the other)

It really depends on the couple and alot of other little things. Maybe they are still clinging to the hope they will get back together...Maybe they don't have the money to spare on all the legal stuff...or they just don't want to take the time to do all the paperwork involved. The woman who lives down the street from me has been seperated for 9 years and still hasn't gotten a divorce because her ex travels on his job and is just never around to get all the paperwork done.

Don't know maybe it's a legal separation? I think that's what it's called. Maybe they don't want to go through the trouble of going to court with a divorce, or the legal stuff, so to speak. Maybe they want to stay together, but don't want to live with each other, I don't know some people are weird.

- Divorce can cost a lot and they may not have the money
- They might just be having a break from eachother
-There religon may not allow them to divorce
- They might want to benifit from the things a couple get when they are married (pension stuff and whatever.)

Because it's a pain in the butt. You can get married cheaply and quickly but it can take a lot of money and time to get divorced especially when children are involved.
