the main labias that are the thicker, fleshy dermis coated ones on the outdoors of the vagina are meant to guard the interior, minor labia from any germs, rubbing from clothing, etc. the interior labia are meant to guard the hollow to the lady's cervix to stay clear of any outdoors germs or foreign places bodies from coming into and inflicting an infection. it is basically a holding masking to a woman's inner maximum section.

Females are particularly prone to infections, thanks to anatomy. Evolution dropped the ball on this one. The labia are the counterattack to any pathogen. Similarly, mucus secreted inside the vagina is a secondary defense against infection. With labia, no large objects get in, which is good because there is probably bacteria on them (bacteria are everywhere!). Also, it keeps air out, which is another source of pathogens.

They act as a protective barrier for the vagina's orifice.
They act much like our eye lids do, this is why the eye and the vagina are the only two self-cleaning human organs.
