For me it was after 9/11. I developed a love for this country that I never had before and I realized that Democrats didn't share that same love as I did.

I was in my youth a liberal Democrat. Political correctness and the fact that I had to start paying taxes were probably the biggest influences in my switch. Also, I started analysing issues with my brain instead of my heart. Doesn't make much sense to me to do what "feels"right if it is obviously a mistake.

Most people that are conservative started out wanting the same things the dems illedgedly stand for. Feeding the poor, world peace, etc... Conservative at some point though, were hit with a strong dose of reality (ie...9/11) and realized the world really doesn't work like that. You have to practically deal with issues. Pragmatism always outweighs idealism. Liberals are not realists.

when I figured out they were wrong on nearly every issue.
The icing on the cake was when Clinton forced gun control down our throats in a most deceptive and clever way.And during the mid-term elections all the dirty tricks the democrats did---as well as when they exited the white house how they vandalized and stole artifacts. Actually the vandalizing was a smoke screen to draw attention away in a tongue-in-cheek manner from the fact 1st lady billery walked away with some very expensive property from airforce1 and the white house. And then the DNC advocates such nasty behavior that it shows a lack of morals. I could go on and on for hours with many details---enough to fill a book-----or read you a book. LOL That party is bad news for this country---we need integrity

fairly. i've got continuously been a conservative, yet I used to have some somewhat liberal perspectives. as an occasion, I used to believe in evolution, yet i'm now a strict creationist. I extensively utilized to be unsure on abortion, yet i'm now strongly professional-existence. maximum at present, till a pair of 12 months in the past, i became into an environmentalist, and that i belived in international warming. yet understand i realize it fairly is a organic cycle, if it is even going on in any respect.

When I first turned 18, I registered Democrat because that is what my parents are. Then, when I finished college (with a degree in American History) and got out into the working world, I started to see things differently. I saw how things like affirmative action hurts people, not helps. I saw how labor unions took advantage of the average worker (granted, unions were VERY important decades ago). I saw how the Democratic party wanted to tuck everyone in in eider down quilts, and provide social programs for everything, instead of letting workers go out and make their own opportunities, without the government meddling in everything. That's when I switched. I am actually more of a progressive by ideals, but the Republican party better represented my views, especially on the local level (although there is NO party that I think is perfect - there are problems in all of them).

What about those of us who are not Dems or Repubs? Not liberal and not conservative but more moderate, populist type independents? The way I understand our country's demographics the majority lies mostly in the middle with the lib/con types occupying the fringes.

And will conservatives ever return to conservatism? The fiscal conservative, limited goverment type?

Believe it or not, I was once a lib when I was younger. When I grew up and started working for a living and paying bills I quickly found out how the tax and spend liberals are ruining the working families. I also saw how the libs are trying to destroy the United States and wanted no part of supporting any democrat. Hopefully the young libs who post here and don't have a clue will wakeup also!

I loved my country before 9/11. That's why I was on a deployment on a Navy submarine when it happened. I stay a liberal democrat because I refused to be bullied by terrorists or frightened by my leaders into submission.

Well, I grew up in a household with a conservative father and a liberal mother, and for me personally, my father's opinions always made more sense to me, although we do not agree on all issues. However, my mother's opinions made more sense to my sister, and she is liberal.

Made for great dinner conversation, and it gave all of us a tolerance and respect for people who hold different opinions than our own.
