I hear a lot about freedom of speech from many of you. Why are most of you for the fairness doctrine? When it has, in court, proven to limit free speech.
The decision to press for re-establishment of the Fairness Doctrine now seems to have developed for two reasons. "First, [Democrats] failed on the radio airwaves with Air America, no one wanted to listen," says a senior adviser to Pelosi. "Conservative radio is a huge threat and political advantage for Republicans and we have had to find a way to limit it. Second, it looks like the Republicans are going to have someone in the presidential race who has access to media in ways our folks don't want, so we want to make sure the GOP has no advantages going into 2008."

Blueridge - Open your mind, you may learn something. I read liberal and conservative press before I answer a question.
CK4829 - I never said the press was liberal. Again, open your mind.

Osama - CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, etc. are all run by liberals. They present and carry stories and don't provide "both" sides of the story. Meet the Press and the other Sunday morning political shows are the only "balanced" news that they provide or give the other side a chance to respond. The only quasi conservative news network is Fox and last time I looked, Fox News gives everyone a chance to speak regardless of their political affiliation.

The fairness doctrine's constitutionality was tested and upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark 1969 case, Red Lion Broadcasting v. FCC (395 U.S. 367). Although the Court then ruled that it did not violate a broadcaster's First Amendment rights, the Court cautioned that if the doctrine ever began to restrain speech, then the rule's constitutionality should be reconsidered.
Just five years later, without ruling the doctrine unconstitutional, the Court concluded in another case that the doctrine "inescapably dampens the vigor and limits the variety of public debate" (Miami Herald Publishing Co. v. Tornillo, 418 U.S. 241). In 1984, the Court concluded that the scarcity rationale underlying the doctrine was flawed and that the doctrine was limiting the breadth of public debate (FCC v. League of Women Voters, 468 U.S. 364). This ruling set the stage for the FCC's action in 1987. An attempt by Congress to reinstate the rule by statute was vetoed by President Ronald Reagan in 1987,

I agree with you...want to hear something ironic? until I started coming to the yahoo answer's forum I did not know that Fox or Rush were biased...I also had no idea that every media outlet was considered left or right...That's not the ironic part...I don't listen to Rush or watch Fox News, I watch the liberal left News stations hahahaha...they never once swayed my opinion...I am a Conservative Republican and I support the war...I just thought the reporters were morons! True story! no joke!
then I came here and I am accused of being brain washed when it was their own media I was exposed to...

There additionally are many outrageous concepts superconservative Republicans have, like a flat tax. the only clarification why the "fairness Doctrine" is on center degree actual now is via fact Republicans haven't any significant coverage themes to argue over -- they are incorrect on all of those! LoL!!! no longer each Democrat believes in the doctrine the two. So do no longer team all people in an analogous social gathering as believing an analogous suitable factor. right here YOU flow IDIOTS, on your VENERABLE FOX information: White homestead: Obama Opposes 'fairness Doctrine' Revival

Without a 'fairness doctrine' corporate owned radio becomes simply a propaganda outlet for industry and the particular political establishmets they own and operate. The point is, the 'people' own the airways and by law the airways are to be operated in the public interest. It's in the public interest that nobody should dominate a public information utility. Right wing radio comes up with this BS that 'fairness' is a bad thing. It's not, no matter how many times a day the right wing radio bozos say it is. But fear not....the truth will out because results count. No matter how many time someone dumps on the strawman 'liberals', the track record of the reactionary right can't hide behind insults and nonsense. People notice when the king has no clothes.

Broadcasters are acting extremely irresponsible on air. The fairness doctraine has two stipulations, one, personal attacks on another must be defended, and, two, political speech must be held to a fair standard, with, opposing viewpoints entertained. These are merely standards that are fair and respomsible.

So that they can continue to control what we hear, just like they have in the past. They're scared.
Freedom of Speech means listening only to what they spew, to them.

EDIT: I love it. Listen, pal. My mind is completely open. Heritage is NOT a "conservative news" outlet. I am completely aware of what Heritage is, perhaps you are not? No, I will NOT read propaganda. I am very selective in my sensory input. "Trash in, trash out."
