I agree. When someone who has had a hard life makes it big and then turns it around to help those in need is someone to look up to. "Pay It Forward" is a good motto. It's not like Paris Hilton, who was handed all her money. She did nothing to actually earn it. She was born into it. What has she done with her money but spend it foolishly and get in trouble?
In response to answer from Dusk - how much money has your church contributed to helping out the needy or in finding this child? I'm just curious as to how you, personally, are helping out since you are so close to Jesus? I believe in God and Jesus and try and live a good life but somehow your statement comes across a bit phony to me. A holier than thou type.
Have you even read Harry Potter or do you just preach because they contain - oh horrors - magic? They celebrate Christmas and Easter in the books did you know? Also, there are good and bad people in the books - just like in life - and there are lessons to be learned when reading them. If kids read the books and learn something positive from them, who cares if the books are set in a fantasy scenario or not.

Like that of her own character, Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling's life has the luster of a fairy tale. Divorced, living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at a table in a café during her daughter's naps —and it was Harry Potter that rescued her. First, the Scottish Arts Council gave her a grant to finish the book. After its sale to Bloomsbury (UK) and Scholastic Books, the accolades began to pile up. Harry Potter won The British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, and the Smarties Prize, and rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
I think anyone who works hard for their own money and comes from poverty to wealth deserve to be recognized for their accomplishments.

I agree with you about the harry potter lady. She was scraping by on benefits and started writing her story in a cafe with a cup of tea, and her little boy in his pram. That`s some story right there i think - don`t you ? ! She has done really well for herself. She also donates a lot of money to charity. I know she gave a million pound once to some women`s charity. She`s very generous. That`s cos she`s been there, she knows how hard life can be. Trouble with some celebrities - they`ve always had money and they don`t know what it`s like to live from hand to mouth. Same with politicians. They should be made to walk a mile in the other man`s shoes.................................

Not sure those books are any better or worse than quite a few others out there. She just happened to hit the right market at the right time to be successful.

"Thumbs up" to J. K. Rowling for her generous contribution.
"Thumbs down" to the parents who left their young child alone. "We were only 150 yards away..." and "we checked on them frequently..." kind of rings hollow. Was it really necessary for them to leave their children just to have dinner in a nearby restaurant? -RKO- 05/15/07
